Windows 7 Language: A global approach

Tuesday, November 17, 2009 · 0 comments

Since its anticipation Microsoft has always targeted for global customer base. Achieving such a goal is not an easy task. You have to put a lot of efforts to manage the Global Customer. The most prominent topic is to localized Windows 7 Language into different languages used across the world. Building global software is a team work.
Though English is the basic language but if we are talking about a global experience it can't come without the introduction of Non-Latin script. Hence the multi-lingual concept was required for Windows 7 Lanuage. Since the goal of Windows 7 is to deliver exciting features that benefit users worldwide as well as features that make Windows feel local to every user. Windows 7's focus is to improve the fundamental scenarios of performance and reliability, for a great customer experience in every language and every country.
The international features of Windows 7 Language are pervasive across the system, from low-level aspects as the supported characters in NTFS file names (now upgraded to match Unicode 5.1) to high-level aspects as the selection of backgrounds and themes (now including locally-relevant photos). However there are certain features that are intrinsically critical for proper support of the world’s many languages and cultures. Lets have a look some of those here.
Fonts
Language and writing are at the core of any culture and thus support for fonts is essential to supporting international users. Windows 7 Language have wide range and quality of fonts it has added fifty more fonts in it.
Windows 7 will be the first version of Windows to ship with more fonts for non-Latin scripts than for Latin-based scripts. One major area of improvement is for the languages of India. To the nine (9) fonts for Indian languages that shipped in Vista, Windows 7 adds forty (40) more. Besides new fonts, Windows 7 has also improved many of the existing fonts. For example, two thousand (2,000) glyphs to Consolas, Calibri, Cambria Bold, and Cambria Math. But the most dramatic improvements have been to some of the non-Latin scripts. For example, Windows 7 Language does a much better job rendering the common Lam-Alef ligature in Arabic and in the placement of vowel marks.
Its always tricky to amend any change in fonts because of backwards compatibility issues. For example, if a character changes width or position, it may cause existing documents to reflow (repaginate), which is unacceptable. Therefore after creating any change in font, its essential to run extensive verification tests against the changes to ensure the font metrics and other tables are unchanged. The font team worked closely with the international application compatibility team to ensure that changes we made did not affect the order of glyphs within the font, thus providing backward compatibility.

Top tips to stay safe online and protect your privacy

Wednesday, September 9, 2009 · 0 comments

Keeping your guard up is essential to avoiding trouble on the Internet. Here are some tips from FindLaw.com, the world's leading online legal resource, on how you can stay safe online:

Don't give out personal information too easily.

Avoid giving out personal information such as your name, address and telephone number on Web sites until you've read and understand their privacy policy. For example, be on guard for any online promotion or contest in which you may be asked to provide details about yourself. This information will likely be used to market to you in the future. Never give out your Social Security number online, unless you are certain the site is secure.

You're being monitored.

Be careful of the e-mails you send and the Web sites you visit while at work. In most U.S. states, employees have little if any privacy protection from employers who may be monitoring their e-mails and Internet usage while on the job you can get antivirus support to avoid these things.

Don't reply to spam.

Ever get one of those strange, unexpected e-mails for real estate, weight loss, work-at-home or investment opportunities? Your best bet is to delete those e-mails without opening them. Never reply to these e-mails, even to remove your name from their lists. Replying will alert the sender that your e-mail is a "live" e-mail attached to an actual person.

Secured Web sites only.

Before you purchase a product or service online with a credit card, make sure the connection is secure or encrypted. Look for a small lock icon on the Web site, or look at the URL address line; a secure connection will begin with https:// instead of http://.

Beware of public wireless sites.

Don't send personal or confidential information when using public wireless connections in coffee shops and other public places. Fellow wireless users could potentially monitor your Internet usage from their laptops, only a few feet away.

Would your mother blush?

Avoid revealing personal information or photos on Web sites such as Facebook, MySpace or SecondLife. Personal, possibly very embarrassing information or images could haunt you in the years to come, when applying for college or a new job. If it's on the Internet, it's available for a potential employer, your school, a future or current spouse, or heaven forbid, your mother or grandmother to find it.

Don't trust your best friend (even your partner).

As a number of recent incidents involving "sexting" demonstrate, sending photos of yourself in the nude or in compromising positions could not only be extremely embarrassing when a partner or ex-partner starts to share those photos with his or her friends, but it also could be illegal.

Always go with a friend.

When using Web sites such as Craigslist or Freelist to buy or exchange goods locally, always bring a friend, your partner or your spouse with you to meet a seller or buyer. Avoid allowing a potential buyer into your home, as they may be checking it out for potential valuables, and avoid going into the home of a seller.

Watch your cookies.

Internet Cookies are tidbits of information that Web sites store on your computer. The spyware creates a Firefox add-on called "Adobe Flash Player 0.2", which has nothing to do with either Adobe or Mozilla. More on the threat can be found in a write-up by Trend, which includes screenshots,

Malware targeting Firefox users is rare but not unprecedented. Strains of malware that latch onto Internet Explorer, Microsoft's Swiss-cheese browser, are much more commonplace. Common IE-related malware trickery involves exploiting unpatched security vulns to download malware onto vulnerable machines via drive-by download attacks.

Block Spyware Websites With Inoculate

Sunday, August 23, 2009 · 0 comments

Many spyware infections happen on particularly prepared websites. These websites might take advantage of web browser vulnerabilities or offer software and files for download that infect a computer system once they are executed on it. Web users have several protection mechanisms that they can use to protect their computer system from these spyware infections. Modern antivirus software usually comes with modules that blocks or warns a user whenever a website with questionable content is visited. Another option to protect a computer system against spyware infections is to install browser plugins like Web of Trust that classify websites and report a safety rating back to the user.

And then there are programs like Inoculate that use the hosts file of the operating system to block spyware websites from being opened by routing the address of the spyware removal to the local computer system (which means the website will not be displayed when the user tries to open it).

Inoculate is a portable software program for the Windows operating system that will add more than 14001 spyware websites to the Windows host file. These 14001 spyware websites are blocked from being accessed by users of the computer system. The software creates a backup of the current host file before it begins to add the spyware websites to it so that spyware attacks and spyware programs are automatically blocked.

It is possible to reset the Windows hosts file or restore a previously created backup. One slight disadvantage of this spyware blocking approach is that it is not possible to view the spyware websites before they are added to the hosts file. Another problem is that the program is not automatically updating the spyware list over the Internet which alternatives like Hostsman which offers four different block lists and auto updating. Hostsman on the other hand is not a portable software program.

Maybe you turned off your virus scanner because it conflicted with another program. Maybe you got tired of upgrading after you bought Norton Antivirus 2001, 2002, and 2003. Or maybe your annual subscription of virus definitions recently expired, and you've put off renewing.

It happens. It's nothing to be ashamed of. But chances are, either you're infected right now, as we speak, or you will be very soon.

For a few days in late January, the Netsky.p worm was infecting about 2,500 PCs a day. Meanwhile the MySQL bot infected approximately 100 systems a minute (albeit not necessarily desktop PCs). As David Perry, global director of education for security software provider Trend Micro, puts it, "an unprotected [Windows] computer will become owned by a bot within 14 minutes."

Today's viruses, worms, and so-called bots--which turn your PC into a zombie that does the hacker's bidding (such as mass-mailing spam)--aren't going to announce their presence. Real viruses aren't like the ones in Hollywood movies that melt down whole networks in seconds and destroy alien spacecraft. They operate in the background, quietly altering data, stealing private operations, or using your PC for their own illegal ends. This makes them hard to spot if you're not well protected.

I should start by saying that not every system oddity is due to a virus, worm, or bot. Is your system slowing down? Is your hard drive filling up rapidly? Are programs crashing without warning? These symptoms are more likely caused by Windows, or badly written legitimate programs, rather than malware. After all, people who write malware want to hide their program's presence. People who write commercial software put icons all over your desktop. Who's going to work harder to go unnoticed?

Other indicators that may, in fact, indicate that there's nothing that you need to worry about, include:

An automated e-mail telling you that you're sending out infected mail. E-mail viruses and worms typically come from faked addresses. A frantic note from a friend saying they've been infected, and therefore so have you. This is likely a hoax. It's especially suspicious if the note tells you the virus can't be detected but you can get rid of it by deleting one simple file. Don't be fooled--and don't delete that file. I'm not saying that you should ignore such warnings. Copy the subject line or a snippet from the body of the e-mail and plug it into your favorite search engine to see if other people have received the same note. A security site may have already pegged it as a hoax.

How To Remove Microsoft .NET Spyware Extension

Monday, August 17, 2009 · 0 comments

Back around the end of January there was a Microsoft Windows Update (KB951466847) that installed the SpyWare (done without user consent/knowledge and can not be removed easily) Microsoft .NET Framework Assistant 1.0 extension into Firefox. Note: If you have not install Windows Update KB951847 OR not using Windows Update this extension will not be installed.

Notice how the ‘Uninstall’ button is greyed out? I learned about this from a post )Microsoft Infiltrates Firefox) at GoFirefox! However, because I am using Shirhd7etoko 3.1b3pre and the add-on was not compatible with this build it never fully installed. I was able to remove the add-on following these directions:

1. Close Firefox
2. In Windows Explorer go to this location:
C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\Windows Presentation Foundation\DotNetAssistantExtension
3. This folder should contain 2 sub-folder and 2 files. Just in case for some odd reason you might need these files, create a zip or rar file containing these items and place it somewhere else.
4. Delete everything in this folder, but leave the folder
5. Restart Firefox and go to your add-ons list. The add-on should no longer be listed.
6. In the address bar type about:config
7. In the Filter field type general.useragent
8. Look for an entry called general.useragent.extra.microsoftdotnet
9. Right -click on the entry and select ‘reset’

Now, for the most part these steps worked for me. However, as I had mentioned earlier it never fully installed since it was not compatible with Shiretoko 3.1b3pre. In this case I completed Steps 1-5 but noticed the add-on was still there and still disabled. Next, I had to close Firefox again, go to my profile folder and remove the files: extensions.cache, extensions.ini and extensions.rdf. This forces Firefox to rebuild the extensions list, however when I did this step, the Night Tester Tools add-on broke. Not good, now about half my extensions that I had “forced” to work, weren’t working now. So I had to uninstall the Night Tester Tools extension, restart Firefox, re-install the extension, restart Firefox, over-ride compatibility on the currently disabled add-ons and restart Firefox once again. Since the ad-on never fully installed, I did not have an about:config entry for general.useragent.extra.microsoftdotnet.

Symantec & McAfee Get Slap on Hand

Thursday, August 13, 2009 · 0 comments

I have heard from many customers how McAfee and Symantec (also known as Norton) both do this autobill thing where they charge you each year automatically for your Anti-virus software subscription. I am not a fan of either of these products for many reasons, and this is absolutely another huge thing they do that I have never agreed with.

They both have these auto billing programs where it is not very clear that you are signing up for a subscription for the virus removal software. They used to send you a message saying go to their website, and renew your subscription. But they started a program where they just started billing the credit card that was on file, and never really told anyone nor did they make it clear they were doing that.

I guess I am not the only one who does not like the practices by these companies. The New York City Attorney has been investigating both companies and surprise, surprise! They both have agreed to pay $350,000 each in penalties and costs for the practices that they have engaged in.
Investigators found that the two companies had "failed to adequately disclose to consumers that subscriptions would automatically be renewed and that consumers would be charged," the office of Andrew Cuomo said in a statement Wednesday announcing the settlement. "Companies cannot play hide the ball when it comes to fees consumers are being charged."

These were deceptive business practices, and should be punished. However, I am sure the $350,000 is a drop in the bucket for these large corporations who get upwards of $79 for a pumped up renewal version of their software. In addition to paying the fine, the companies must be more forthcoming on disclosing their subscription renewal fees.

The two companies will also now refund the customer's charges if requested within 60 days of being billed. There will also be an automated way to opt out of the auto billing, instead of trying to figure out how to not get billed.

I have used both of the products over the years, and at a time, each one was the best. During the early years they were THE best thing out there. Now the companies have become so huge that they have a lot of money and think they need to keep adding things into their "suite" of products. The programs became bloated, and now they are not anywhere near as good as they once were.
Even though this is a little slap on the hand for this large companies, maybe it will help bring them back down to earth and remind them about customer service and who really pays the bills for the company.

Malware/Virus Time-bomb Could go off SEPTEMBER 1st

Tuesday, August 11, 2009 · 0 comments

There are a lot of theories and suggestions of what it could do. The main thing this virus does is allows many computers to attack or "flood" the internet all at the same time, causing what is called denial of service attacks.

Basically it would be like everyone getting in their car and driving down to main street, and trying to drive. Too many cars, not enough road. This is the same concept. The main difference is, you would know if you were driving downtown, in fact more like someone stole your car to drive down there. Your computer just sits there, and you might not even know it is involved in causing the problem!

Here are a couple of things to make sure you do before April 1st:
Check your virus removal program and make sure it is up to date and working. It should be down in your system tray near your clock. Double click on it, ( all the top programs Trend Micro, Norton, McAfee, F-Secure) show you that everything is working or lets you know if there are problems. Most of them have a FIX it button, just click on that if it shows problems.

Second, run a full scan. Many of the programs run a quick scan. On Trend for example, if you open it up and see the scan button, just to the right is an arrow. Click on the down arrow, and choose FULL SCAN. Run that baby and delete any bad stuff it finds.

Lastly Make sure your Windows Security Updates are up to date! You can click here to check Microsoft Updates

If you do not have the worm, there is nothing to worry about. But it is better safe than sorry when it comes to viruses on computers. The biggest threat is to people who are not protected with Internet Security Software, theirs is not working or it is expired.

iYogi Re-Defines Technical Support – BizTech2.

Wednesday, July 29, 2009 · 0 comments

Remote managed services are gaining a lot of attraction these days. Companies are looking to outsource the maintenance and monitoring of their IT infrastructure to a third party to improve efficiency and save costs. BizTech2.com caught up with Uday Challu, founding partner and CEO, iYogi, to see what the company has to offer in this space.

As far as Enterprise and SME customers are concerned, which verticals are you focusing on?

Our focus will mostly be on small companies with around five to 100 users and also firms that have multiple small branch offices like travel agencies, retail stores etc.

What kind of support services do you provide to your customers? What is the Green PC service?

iYogi provides the next generation of remote computer support services for consumers and businesses. For consumers, our live 24/7 support extends to technologies we use everyday, including hardware, software applications, devices, peripherals and networking equipment. iYogi also offers a full range of business IT solutions including managed monitoring, managed services, set-up and installation services, and incident-based services.

Green PC Service

With the current state of the global climate and increasing dependency on the computer, iYogi helps PC users reduce their carbon footprint and save money at the same time. iYogi’s Green PC service is the first in the independent computer support industry to offer customers a way to save money, conserve energy and protect the environment by optimising their PC’s efficiency. Consumers and businesses can save up to $200 per year, per desktop, in energy costs with iYogi’s Green PC application. This green application makes the computer environmentally friendly by reducing power consumption by almost 50 percent.

Our Green PC dashboard helps customise power settings and calculate power savings in kWh (kilowatt hour). The Green PC dashboard also gives a status on the reduction of CO2 and how responsible usage will benefit the environment by saving trees. A customised service that increases the energy efficiency of computers, undertakes the below-mentioned three primary initiatives:

- Computer assessment, analysing settings and PC energy use
- Customised efficiency planning geared specifically to the individual’s usage patterns
- Implementing setting changes to maximise the computer’s energy use

What are the technologies that allow you to offer 24/7 support and ensure there is no downtime at the client site?

We have invested significantly in developing a comprehensive monitoring and management tools stack. This enables us to manage and monitor all devices in the office network as well as for branch offices and mobile users. Our tools continuously monitor the customer’s network and notify our NOC (Network Operations Centre) in case of problems. Based on the set of events, tickets are automatically generated and escalated to corresponding teams. Over and above our proactive approach, the customer always has an option to call our 24X7 support line for issues that are not identified via the monitoring tools.

Please throw some light on your proprietary iMantra technology.

iMantra is a CRM system, which is tailor-made to suit the emerging business needs at iYogi. It allows for the formation of individualised customer relationships with the aim of providing personalised services to each subscriber. This tool is built on the latest java technology with a layered architecture that makes it scalable and secure. This architecture provides a seamless workflow and independent channels for various business needs: sales, support, quality and customer service. The entire system can be exposed in the form of secure APIs and Web services, which makes it a re-usable entity.

Your business model is similar to BPOs in India providing technical support to offshore customers. What unique values do you bring to this ecosystem that would help a potential client choose you over a competitor?

iYogi’s business model is different from traditional BPOs. Some key factors that differentiate iYogi include:

- Direct-to-consumer and -small business: iYogi delivers technical support services directly to consumers and small businesses and is a global technical support brand based out of India. Unlike traditional BPOs in India, iYogi does not provide any private label support and/ or work on behalf of large OEMs or software publishers.

- Optimised Processes: iYogi has developed proprietary processes for consistently delivering on a resolution rate of 87 percent, which is among the highest published benchmarks in the support industry, where averages hover in the range of 50 percent.

- Comprehensive technology platform: iYogi’s global delivery platform, iMantra, gets smarter with every customer interaction. It documents every problem, the solution and relevant hardware and software aspects, while capturing each customer’s demographic information and creating a behavioural profile. All of this information is at the fingertips of iYogi’s Global Tech Experts. This set-up combines a knowledge base with a comprehensive set of tools and technology expertise. iYogi offers a range of tools that complement its remote support services for helping customers maintain technology at peak performance levels. iYogi’s products include iYogi Smart PC Scan, iYogi Support Dock, iYogi Green PC and iYogi PC Optimisation.

How do you plan to move up the value chain in the times to come?

The growing use and penetration of the Internet and new Web-based applications has consequently opened the door to threats and vulnerabilities, which affect the system performance and ultimately lead to degrading performance. If the threats are diagnosed early on, the impact on efficiency can be minimised considerably. Currently, a user only realizes that he needs technical support once the damage has occurred and reactive methods of support are used to recover from the loss.

At iYogi, we are developing our capabilities to not only provide support when demanded, but to also monitor, pre-empt and fix threats before they can cause any damage to the computer. This will be possible only by combining technology with processes that are capable of re-defining the way technical support is delivered today.

What is your India strategy?

Technically, we are capable of servicing any geography including India. At this stage, we are looking for the right kind of partners to find access to potential customers and provide them a consolidated, 360-degree solution and services for issues relating to hardware, software, network etc. We aim to launch our India services in the coming six to eight months. Our services will offer clients a one-stop solution for all their business needs.
